Brassfest

 

Welcome to the 2014 University of Kentucky Brassfest!

We are very excited to be hosting the second annual UK Brassfest, being held on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The date of the festival is February 1st, 2014 and will include concerts, workshops, clinics, vendor displays, solo competitions, a brass quintet competition and the Participant Festival Brass Choir. This year's Brassfest will feature the UK Brass Faculty as well as the Gaudete Brass!

Those competing in the Solo Competitions or the Brass Quintet Competition must register by January 17th. You may also register the morning of February 1st at 8:30am in the ground floor lobby of the UK Fine Arts Building. Cost of the festival is $20.

This year will feature the

1. High School Solo Competition, sponsored by UK Bands

  • First Prize is a FULL IN-STATE TUITION SCHOLARSHIP!

2. Harry Clarke High School Brass Quintet Competition

  • Prizes TBD

Parking information:

Parking is available in any of the "E" lots near the Singletary Center and is free all day Saturday.

Festival Schedule

All events are held on the University of Kentucky campus. The day will begin with on site registration in the ground floor Fine Arts Building lobby. The Worsham Theater is located immediately to your left as you enter the UK Student Center from the entrance near the Wildcat Marching Band Rehearsal Field.

Saturday, February 1st

8:30-9:50            On-Site Registration (FA lobby)

9:00-9:50            High School Brass Quintet Competition (Worsham Theater)

10:00-11:50         Like Instrument Masterclass/Choirs Rehearse (Locations, TBD)

12:00-1:45           LUNCH (on your own)

12:00-1:45           SOLO COMPETITION

2:00-2:50             Gaudette Brass Recital (Worsham Theater)

3:00-4:30             Like Instrument Break-out sessions, including rehearsal of Mass Choir parts (Locations, TBD)

4:45-5:15            Rehearsal, Mass Brass Ensemble (Worsham Theater)

5:15-6:30            DINNER (provided)

6:30                     FINAL CONCERT (Worsham Theater)

 

Festival Brass Choir

This year we will feature all participants on the final evening concert in the Festival Brass Choir. Students will perform alongside UK students, UK faculty, and the Gaudete Brass in this incredible group. The choir will be directed by Professor George Boulden, Associate Director of Bands at UK. The UK Brass Faculty will also join forces with the Gaudete Brass and perform in a Faculty Brass Choir, under the direction of Dr. Cody Birdwell, Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky.

 

Solo Competitions

This year we will be having solo competitions on each instrument with first prize being a FULL IN-STATE TUITION SCHOLARSHIP! The competitions will take place from 12:00-1:30pm.

  1. Four undergraduate in-state tuition scholarships will be awarded (Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Tuba/Euphonium). Note: does not include fees
  2. Students must be of high school age
  3. Students should perform 5-7 minutes of audition material (accompaniment is permissible, but not required)
  4. The judges reserve the right to not pick a winner
  5. Competitors MUST register by the January 17th deadline to be eligible to compete
  6. The competition performance may count as an official University of Kentucky School of Music entrance audition for Fall of 2014
  7. Winners will be announced that evening during the Final Concert.
  8. During enrollment at the University of Kentucky, students must major in music and adhere to all UK Band Scholarship guidelines

 

Brass Quintet Competition

All competing brass quintets must be comprised of students currently enrolled in high school. Students do not necessarily have to attend the same school, they just must be of the correct age. Students may not participate in more than one ensemble. Past winners ARE eligible to compete.

Deadline for competition application is January 17th, 2014 and all five members of the quintet must be registered for the festival to be eligible to compete.

Winners will be announced that evening during the Final Concert.
